The future of surfing: No ocean required

Nov 22 (Reuters) - A surfer drops down the face of a crashing swell, crouches low and stalls his board into the tube, achieving the sport's ultimate goal of a ride inside the barrel.
But instead of being on a sunlit beach in Hawaii or southern California, this surfer is inside a glass-and-concrete building in New Hampshire - at America's newest surf park, an hour's drive from the Atlantic.
"Part of our mission is to bring surfing everywhere, including where there isn't an ocean," said Bruce McFarland, president of American Wave Machines.
The company's SurfStream wave system is being used at the Surfs Up New Hampshire park in Nashua, which is set to open in December.

Hunter surf life savers gun for state crown

 TOP PICK: Lily Costello of Catherine Hill Bay Surf Club competes at last year's NSW Interbranch Championships. She has been selected as part of the Hunter team again this year along with 40 other competitors.

LAST week Hunter Surf Lifesaving named its 2013 representative team to compete at the NSW Interbranch Championships with a talented group gaining selection.
Competitors from the under-12s through to the open age will compete on December 14 and 15 at Soldiers Beach on the Central Coast in a bid to win the Hunter region the state crown.

A barrage of fun size to solid Southern Hemi swells were pitched to the West Coast and Hawaii through the first few months of the season, from mid Spring through late July. Kauai surf breaks are heavily polluted

Thirteen Kaua'i surf breaks have failed to pass the test of health standards, in Hawaii, according to the Surfrider Foundation.

 The Surfrider Foundation's Kaua'i Chapter tests 20 surf breaks and freshwater streams on a monthly basis.

Thirteen of the Chapter's 20 sampling sites exceeded health standards, and the highest reading taken at Niumalu Beach Park was nearly 100 times the national health limit.
